Best Cover Versions Ever!

In these times of recycling , the cover version is much maligned beast. Whether it is the misguided love for a song (I’m looking at you Guns and Roses … ‘Sympathy for the Devil’, really?) or in the hands of a hack out to make a name or just make some cash, covering an established, well-loved song is an easy route. No inspiration required. On the other hand, when an artist takes a song and takes the essence while adding something new to it can be a real treat.

There are two songs that in my opinion stand out a great cover versions. These are my own views and do not necessarily represent the views of any other contributor to the site – but I am right.

Guns N’ Roses @ Liverpool Echo Arena 20/05/12

If you believe the reports then Axl Rose has acted like an arse more times than we can count. Indeed we all would have loved the original line-up to reform and tour / play / Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame / whatever the public wanted, but it looks highly unlikely to ever happen. Axl got the blame for that and yet there are three sides to every story.

Tonight in Liverpool – after a very long wait – the band arrived on stage at 10:55PM which by most accounts is late. Having said that, if this late arrival was a surprise to anyone then they must have been living under a rock. Axl is renowned for turning up late, so what’s the big deal?

Tonight we have a band performing where the singer remains the only original member, the majority of songs performed were written before the current lineup joined, and for the songs where the current band were involved the general consensus is that those songs are from a “shit album”. So why is it then from the moment the band hit the stage they were mesmerising and had the crowd eating from their hand!?! Continue reading

Box Set: Coheed and Cambria

Hopefully you read my “5 Concept Albums That Don’t Suck” piece, yes? If so, you’ll have seen that I touched on Coheed and Cambria and their forays into the world of science fiction with “The Amory Wars”; a tale of action, love and revenge that spans all of the albums and singer/songwriter Claudio Sanchez’s side project The Prize Fighter Inferno.

Here we take a much closer look at all of the Coheed albums from a musical standpoint. I’m going to try to avoid concentrating on the story too much although it’s largely unavoidable. There are three good reasons for trying to avoid getting entrenched in the storyline anyway. Firstly, it will take way too many pages to write that. Secondly, it’s considerably better documented and debated on t’Internet than anything I could produce, namely on fansite Cobalt and Calcium’s forum. And thirdly, I haven’t got a goddamn clue what’s going on past the second album. Continue reading

Sonic Hearts Foundation – The Storm launch @ Glasgow Art Club 28/04/12

At the end of April, Musicscramble New Band Spotlight alumni Sonic Hearts Foundation launched their debut single, ‘The Storm’. To celebrate, they held a multimedia event in Glasgow which melded their unique sonic sound to imagery and played with the traditional band < stage> crowd set up.

Set in Glasgow’s Art Club, the band had set up in the middle of the room allowing the audience to move around the space. Behind there was a projector screen which added further detail. On arrival we were given a copy of debut single, ‘The Storm’ and a programme. Continue reading

New Band Spotlight: Slasher

Slasher Band ShotIn a nice double first for Musicscramble, we go international and introduce our first metal band to the New Band Spotlight fraternity. We had a few words with Lúcio Nunes, guitarist and backing vocalist from Slasher. Amazingly, despite his native Portuguese tongue he apologised for his English and yet I barely had to edit this at all. Hell, his English might well be better than my own!

Who are you and where do you hail from?

We are Slasher, a thrash metal quintet from São Paulo, Brazil.

Please introduce the band members.

As mentioned before, we are 5 members. First, I’ll introduce the ones who are in the band since its beginning in 2008. Daniel Macedo is the vocalist, Wellington Clemente the bassist and backing vocalist and Lucas Aldigheri is the other guitarist. Taddei Roberto, drummer, joined us later in 2010, after Rafael Coradi left to dedicate to his Hard Rock project. Continue reading

RIP MCA

I was extremely saddened to read a few hours ago of the death of Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch. It is believed he died of the cancer which he was diagnosed with in 2009.

The band was terrific on album, and even better live; a pleasure I was lucky enough to experience many times. I think then it is fitting to end this post with a clip of where my memories of Adam lie….on stage. This clip is from a phenomenal T in the Park performance I witnessed back in 1998.
