Jane’s Addiction – End To The Lies (2011)

Jane’s Addiction have released the video for their new single, “End To The Lies”, the first new release since 2003.

Taken from the forthcoming album The Great Escape Artist, at first I wasn’t as drawn in as previous ‘reformed band’ releases such as “Just Because” or “Superhero” but very soon was drawn in by Farrell’s catchy vocal and a brilliant guitar piece from Dave Navarro.

Watch the video below, but be aware that it may not be suitable for work viewing due to some female nudity. Continue reading

Def Leppard – Mirrorball (2011)

On the 3rd of June Def Leppard release their first live album of their career. When Mirrorball started I was blown away and enjoying it very much. By the end I was frustrated and pissed off by it. Why?

I loved Def Leppard when I was growing up. Hysteria was immense, their back catalogue almost as much. However the release I loved most was the “In The Round, In Your Face” VHS which was a recording of their US Hysteria show. I played it almost constantly.

In the days long before digital ‘ripping’ I managed to connect a tape deck to my stereo video recorder and made a ‘live album’ recording. I played this tape even more than I could have done if I needed to watch it. That to me was classic Def Leppard so you can imagine I was very much looking forward to their live album being released.

Rush – Glasgow SECC – 14th May 2011

I am not a Rush fan. In fact over the years I actively disliked them, refusing to listen to anything. If I’m honest it was never fair or founded on anything whatsoever. I don’t know why; simply can’t explain it* – perhaps at some point in my younger years I saw a Rush album cover I didn’t like the look of and simply decided that the band weren’t for me.

I was asked about six months previous to go along to this show with a friend who really wanted to see them, and knowing my love of live music thought I’d go with him. Of course I would; I love live music and seeing a new band always intrigues me. Continue reading

Sixx:A.M. – This Is Gonna Hurt (2011)

Sixx:A.M - This Is Gonna HurtSoundtracks are ten a penny these days with every movie and TV show seemingly churning out an accompanying CDs. But how many times have you listened to the soundtrack of a book? In 2007 Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx, DJ Ashba and James Michael formed Sixx:A.M releasing a companion to Nikki Sixx’s book “The Heroin Diaries: A Year In The Life of a Shattered Rock Star”. The album was a great success and the band are back in 2011 with a second book soundtrack, this time to Nikki Sixx’s “This Is Gonna Hurt”. Continue reading

Steven Tyler – (It) Feels So Good [Video]

Following on from the release of Steven Tyler’s single, the video premiered on American Idol yesterday and is now available below.

I have to admit – although I initially disliked the song, it has really grown on me; a lot. Still weird to see Steven without Aerosmith behind him though!

Aerosmith - Download 2010

Steven and Joe - Download Festival 2010

Steven Tyler released his first debut single this week.

If you have followed rock news over the past 18 months or so then there has been much said regarding Steven’s ‘is he in, is he out’ of Aersomith situation. Public spats with guitarist Joe Perry, ‘he said, and he said’ news stories, auditions for new singers and so on. Then of course there is the American Idol judge role. During the middle of this spat, Aerosmith went on a European tour including Headlining 2010′s Download Festival. A set which I saw, and the band was as amazing as ever.

It came as a surprise to me then that Steven was releasing a solo single and album – especially since one of the arguments Joe Perry gave was pinning Steven down to studio time to record a new album. Of course Steven says that Aerosmith rejected this song for the new Aerosmith album. Continue reading

Whitesnake – Forevermore (2011)

David Coverdale is back once again. When Whitesnake released their last album Bad to Be Good in 2008 it was their first studio album of new material since the average Slip of the Tongue in 1989. At the time, Bad to Be Good was rumoured to be their last, though the band went on a strong tour to support it; a double-headline tour with Def Leppard and playing as special guests to Leppard at the Download Festival (at Donington Park) in 2009. Perhaps it’s this resurgence in popularity, maybe they just damned well enjoyed themselves, but whatever the reason: Whitesnake have a new album.

With the previous album the lineup of musicians was completely new from that of their classic 80s era, and for new album Forevermore Coverdale has kept guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach, but bassist Uriah Duffy and drummer Chris Frazier have been replaced by Michael Devin and Brian Tichy, respectively. Considering Coverdale’s revolving door policy when it comes to Whitesnake, this release is the first time the band sounds truly cohesive since the Come and Get It / Slide It In days. To most fans David Coverdale is Whitesnake and it almost doesn’t matter who is in the band. However that would be doing current guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach in particular a dis-service as their playing here is exemplary.
