Guns N’ Roses @ Liverpool Echo Arena 20/05/12

If you believe the reports then Axl Rose has acted like an arse more times than we can count. Indeed we all would have loved the original line-up to reform and tour / play / Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame / whatever the public wanted, but it looks highly unlikely to ever happen. Axl got the blame for that and yet there are three sides to every story.

Tonight in Liverpool – after a very long wait – the band arrived on stage at 10:55PM which by most accounts is late. Having said that, if this late arrival was a surprise to anyone then they must have been living under a rock. Axl is renowned for turning up late, so what’s the big deal?

Tonight we have a band performing where the singer remains the only original member, the majority of songs performed were written before the current lineup joined, and for the songs where the current band were involved the general consensus is that those songs are from a “shit album”. So why is it then from the moment the band hit the stage they were mesmerising and had the crowd eating from their hand!?! Continue reading

Sonic Hearts Foundation – The Storm launch @ Glasgow Art Club 28/04/12

At the end of April, Musicscramble New Band Spotlight alumni Sonic Hearts Foundation launched their debut single, ‘The Storm’. To celebrate, they held a multimedia event in Glasgow which melded their unique sonic sound to imagery and played with the traditional band < stage> crowd set up.

Set in Glasgow’s Art Club, the band had set up in the middle of the room allowing the audience to move around the space. Behind there was a projector screen which added further detail. On arrival we were given a copy of debut single, ‘The Storm’ and a programme. Continue reading

RIP MCA

I was extremely saddened to read a few hours ago of the death of Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch. It is believed he died of the cancer which he was diagnosed with in 2009.

The band was terrific on album, and even better live; a pleasure I was lucky enough to experience many times. I think then it is fitting to end this post with a clip of where my memories of Adam lie….on stage. This clip is from a phenomenal T in the Park performance I witnessed back in 1998. Radiohead – OK Computer (1997)

From the initial off-time drums to the heavily distorted guitar refrain, ‘Airbag’ tells you that this is a different Radiohead to that which you heard on their previous album, The Bends. A very different Radiohead.

Sure, sitting here in 2012 looking back to their 1997 release you would be forgiven for thinking that it just sounds like Radiohead do. But back then, it was clear that as an artist they were about progression, and ‘High & Dry’ this was not. ‘Airbag’ was just so different and did not easily invite the listener in, or wrap warm cosy feelings around them.

I loved Radiohead before OK Computer was released, and had already had the pleasure of seeing them live on The Bends tour twice. In that regard I was already a fully paid up member of the “I love Radiohead club”. But then perhaps I had more to lose, what if I wanted (or at least expected) The Bends Part 2. Certainly at the time there were many who hated OK Computer, and still do as they wonder what happened to their favourite little Indie Rock Band as they cry “Why won’t they play ‘Creep’ live anymore?”

Skindred / Therapy? / Black Spiders – Jägermeister Tour @ O2 Academy Glasgow, 11/04/12

20120416-115022.jpgPulling in to Glasgow on Wednesday night for the second night of the fantastic value Jagermeister tour, were Black Spiders, Therapy? and Skindred. Playing with the touring bands we also had local band Yashin.

For the rest of the tour Black Spiders were on second – after the local band – but for some inexplicable reason, they were on first tonight and excruciatingly early. Black Spiders drummer looks like the bastard son of Travis Barker, and at times plays almost as frenetically. Black Spiders are a bit like Marmite to most, personally I really like them. I’ve seen them a handful of times over the years and really like their album and EPs.

Garbage – Blood for Poppies (2012)

Garbage are back, and that makes me very happy (not just when it rains!). OK that’s a bad pun, but on hearing ‘Blood for Poppies’ for the first time one thing is clear – a seven-year hiatus was absolutely the best thing which could have happened if the resultant music is as good as this!

‘Blood for Poppies’ is being given away on Garbage own website when you pre-order the new album, Not Your Kind of People and is their first single. As the song starts a familiar-sounding electronic drumbeat kicks of proceedings before a dirty guitar sound takes over. The first surprise is that the song is definitely reggae in style! But boy does it work. Shirley Manson’s vocal lends itself very well to the style and before you know it the chorus has crept up on you! Continue reading
