Box Set: Coheed and Cambria

Hopefully you read my “5 Concept Albums That Don’t Suck” piece, yes? If so, you’ll have seen that I touched on Coheed and Cambria and their forays into the world of science fiction with “The Amory Wars”; a tale of action, love and revenge that spans all of the albums and singer/songwriter Claudio Sanchez’s side project The Prize Fighter Inferno.

Here we take a much closer look at all of the Coheed albums from a musical standpoint. I’m going to try to avoid concentrating on the story too much although it’s largely unavoidable. There are three good reasons for trying to avoid getting entrenched in the storyline anyway. Firstly, it will take way too many pages to write that. Secondly, it’s considerably better documented and debated on t’Internet than anything I could produce, namely on fansite Cobalt and Calcium’s forum. And thirdly, I haven’t got a goddamn clue what’s going on past the second album. Continue reading

New Band Spotlight: Slasher

Slasher Band ShotIn a nice double first for Musicscramble, we go international and introduce our first metal band to the New Band Spotlight fraternity. We had a few words with Lúcio Nunes, guitarist and backing vocalist from Slasher. Amazingly, despite his native Portuguese tongue he apologised for his English and yet I barely had to edit this at all. Hell, his English might well be better than my own!

Who are you and where do you hail from?

We are Slasher, a thrash metal quintet from São Paulo, Brazil.

Please introduce the band members.

As mentioned before, we are 5 members. First, I’ll introduce the ones who are in the band since its beginning in 2008. Daniel Macedo is the vocalist, Wellington Clemente the bassist and backing vocalist and Lucas Aldigheri is the other guitarist. Taddei Roberto, drummer, joined us later in 2010, after Rafael Coradi left to dedicate to his Hard Rock project. Continue reading

Straight Lines – Freaks Like Us (2012)

Straight Lines - Freaks Like UsEver since I first heard Straight Lines début Persistence In This Game I’ve been excited to hear more from the band. It’s only been a couple of years, but they’re back already with follow up Freaks Like Us. I’m happy to report that it’s just as great if not better than their first release.

Although the album only sports 10 tracks and clocks in at 36 minutes long, you really won’t mind and as those last few seconds tick away you’ll hope your player is set to repeat so you can experience it all again. Its shortness is rather appealing to me as it just so happens to be roughly the time it takes me to get to work in the morning. If your own journey is longer, never fear; you can always listen to it again! Continue reading

Sinch – Hive Mind (2012)

Sinch - Hive MindI’ve had a fair bit of difficulty with this review. Sinch have been one of my favourite bands for a long while despite having a fairly sparse release history. I’ve been waiting seven years for a successor to 2005’s Clearing the Channel to come along but in this time I’ve never tired of listening to the back catalogue. After last years disappointment seeing Mötley Crüe live for the first time I was wary of falling into the trap of overzealous anticipation, and so I listened to Hive Mind with a mixture of excitement and open mindedness. And I didn’t like it. Thankfully though, that’s not the end of the tale. Continue reading

A Few Words With Dave McPherson

Dave McPherson

Dave in action

Musicscramble recently went along for our first big proper rock star adventure. We’ve had some great communication with bands so far what with our growing New Band Spotlight section and a few chats, but those have all been conducted via email or social media. This was our first proper face to face, and I for one was a little nervous. Dave McPherson comes across as a really nice bloke on Facebook and Twitter, but was it to be a facade? Would he really be swamped in a miasma of rock star ego in real life?

We met Dave outside of Stereo, the venue InMe were due to play in a few hours time. As first support band Mojo Fury were currently on and the noise levels were too high, we made our way round the corner to find somewhere quieter for a chat. From the outset with a warm handshake, friendly hello’s and mentioning he’d been for a shower in the nearby train station and managed to get a laundry on this week, any fears of a jumped up rock star were quickly shattered. Turns out in real life he’s just as affable and welcoming as he comes across on the ‘net. Continue reading
