Paul’s Top Ten Albums of 2011

It’s that time of year when all you get on TV, radio, magazines and the Internet are reviews of the last twelve months. So with that in mind, here’s my top ten of twenty eleven :)

Gareth’s already posted his and surprisingly there’s little symmetry between our choices with only one album sharing a spot in both charts. Assured though there were a lot of great released in 2011 and this was a difficult list for me to compile. But I was forced to listen to them all again as a ‘precaution’, so it wasn’t exactly a hardship. Continue reading

Gareth’s Top 10 Albums of 2011

There were hundreds of albums released in 2011, and followers of musicscramble would have read some of our reviews as they release through the year. However, looking back over 2011 and despite many top bands returning with album releases it felt like there was a somewhat of a ‘stunning album drought’.

Unlike previous years it was a little easier to make a Top Ten albums list for 2011, but culling the list of strong albums down to ten was still difficult – just easier than previous years. Without further comment here is my list. Continue reading

Manic Street Preachers – National Treasures (2011)

I love the Manics. It’s worth mentioning this up front, because it’s entirely unlikely I’ll write an unbiassed review.

The first I was introduced to the Manics was when “You Love Us” was released in 1991. Apart from a few self-releases, this was the debut single proper, and I clearly remember jumping around my bedroom to the song as I watched them perform on ‘Top of the Pops’. I was 16, and although I didn’t know better, during the years which intervened the Manics became no less important. I still jumped around, release after release!

It was 1991, I was 16 and the Manics were upon us. I decided to visit my local record shop rather than attend a double-Maths class at school the day debut album Generation Terrorists was released. To this day do not regret it! I have been a fan since that year and have loved almost everything the band have done since. Continue reading

Lamb of God – New Album…

Lamb of God - ResolutionLamb of God have officially confirmed the title and track listing of their forthcoming sixth studio album. The album will be named “Resolution” and is scheduled for release on January 24th 2012.

Somewhat strangely, at least one track on the album is set to feature a choir and orchestra. Drummer Chris Adler told Gun Shy Assassin, “Yeah — there’s opera singers, a whole symphony going on — it’s crazy,” … “We were trying to figure out how to not be black metal but do something totally different. I think we succeeded.” Continue reading

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

In 1996 there was no other band in the UK who could create ticket demand such as that of Oasis. They were at the height of their game culminating in playing to 250,000 people across two nights at Knebworth Park in the August.

At this point, Oasis had released two albums Definitely Maybe and (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? containing songs entirely written by Noel Gallagher. Jump forward 15 years and Oasis has since disintegrated in a flurry of their typical media mis-quotes and arguments between the Gallagher brothers.

The remaining members of Oasis including Liam formed Beady Eye and have already released an album and toured the UK. Noel waited two full years from Oasis’ demise before releasing any new material. This album is the fruits of that hiatus. Continue reading

Exit Ten – Give Me Infinity (2011)

Exit Ten - Give Me InfinitySurprisingly it’s been three years since Exit Ten’s excellent debut album Remember The Day was released. It’s been a firm favourite of mine which has seen the song “Fine Night” topping my Last.FM overall top tracks chart over other much longer established artists. It’s fair to say then that I’m a big fan of the band and have been awaiting the release of follow up Give Me Infinity with baited breath. Any artist’s second record has a lot to live up to and this one in my eyes has an absolute stormer to beat. Continue reading

Nirvana – Nevermind : 20 Years On: A Personal Retrospective

Nirvana - NevermindAs a young misguided youth, I was a raver. I cringingly remember in fact correcting a teacher in school when he said I listened to rave and I made him change it to “hardcore”. I’d always been partial to a little guitar though, but was never interested in the screaming hairy guys shouting at me and so I’d never heard much in the way of guitar based bands. Now I think of it, actual bands, not just a bloke on a computer. But one day I was handed a C90 cassette with Nevermind on it and my life was changed forever. It seems like such a cliché to say that, but in my case it’s absolutely true.

Metallica – Master of Puppets (1986)

Master of Puppets Album CoverIf you’d asked me which of Metallica’s albums I’d like to review, and if I was honest then this probably wouldn’t be the first one I’d choose to review. Of course there is a little bit of snobbery in there; after all Master of Puppets is considered the seminal work by the band.

Master… is the one that most fans and critics rate highest. It is genre defining, and also the album which allowed the band to break into the big time, before hitting the stratosphere with their fifth album The Black Album in 1991.

I really love the album but simply put: reviewing Master of Puppets feels a bit like a cliche, but one which cannot be helped. It truly is a phenomenal album which achieved everything, and is also the last to feature bassist Cliff Burton before his untimely death. Continue reading
